Sony Believes PS Vita Won't Match PSP Sales

Sony's UK Marketing Director Fergal Gara reveals quite a bit regarding what Sony is hoping for in terms of PS Vita sales……..

Fegal Gara claims that Sony have hoped for higher sales but is being more realistic:
"Being open and honest, I think we would have hoped for higher sales,"
Gara believes this is a result of market change since the PS Vita was conceived:
"I guess it entered a market which was much more complicated than it was when Vita was first conceived and designed.
"The positive, though, is that it most certainly does the job it was intended to do very well and the feedback from gamers is exactly that – it’s a powerful device that satisfies them,"

He then started discussing the difference between the PS Vita and PSP and what they are hoping for in terms of sales:
"The PSP and Vita landed into considerably different worlds,"
"As far as the Vita is concerned, the advent of handheld gaming on phone and tablets complicated the marketplace.
"While we believe that the Vita is a specialist device that does the job better than other alternatives, people can only carry so many devices – and the people that want the very specialist experience is not as large as the pool of people that just want any gaming experience available to them on the go,"
He then confirms that Sony is not expecting the PS Vita to match or outsell the PSP
The Vita doesn’t look likely to achieve the same sales levels as the PSP, but the encouraging thing is that Vita sales are not declining and its new role with the PS4 has only just begun."

Let us know what you think of PS Vita sales and how Sony can improve sales in the comments below!

thats only because the vita will mostly likely wont have the same type game library as the psp

LightningBoltAction said...

Since it can run Borderlands 2, put GTAV on that thing.

JuhRo said...

If only that were the case. -- The only reason it doesn't have the library is cause it doesn't have the audience. It doesn't have the audience because it's in a different market than what the PSP was in. -- The article hits the root of the issue. The game library won't attract millions of people who prefer flappy bird.

i agree with u the market isnt how it use to be but at the same time its isnt as bad as ppl make it just look at the 3ds sales. i believe that the wont be a runaway hit in the US or EU but its capable to put up decent numbers with the right software.

The vita sales are poor partly due to ot entering the smartphone era? Yes I believe phones affected sales but the 3ds is selling pretty well and that proves that there is still a market. It proved if you release fames people actually want then your system will sell also ports of 2 year old games don't count, this could also be said with the wii u.

it's because it came in a time when smartphone gaming became so popular and diverse. back then the phone games are mostly made up of snake, pinball & space invaders

Plain and simple: No NEW Square Enix or Namco JRPG's = NO SALE. And I don't mean just 1 or 2 titles either. More like 5 per company. so that means 5 new Final Fantasies and 5 New Tales..... LOCALIZED.

bubby bubbins said...

I play soul sac, toukiden, sly cooper, malicious, guacamelee, walking dead, tearaway, kz mercenary, sine mora......and flappy bird

The 3ds has many crappy licensed games to sell to the little ones. Its sad but crap like skulltimate roller maze Sells 3ds

JuhRo said...

Look at the 3DS sales and you'll see that they're also going to fall short to the original DS.

JuhRo said...

Not many are avid gamers as us. ;) -- got nothing against the addictive headache we call Flappy Bird.

SE needs to help out... but FFX will help for sure... maybe KH

true the 3ds isnt goin to sale 150 million units but it can (and will) sale at least 100 plus million units and believe the can sale at least 50 plus million units if they had compelling software thats exclusive to vita.

fatdog21 said...

the vita needs jrpg's , fps's, sport games, and action adventure games and right now the vita have little to none in those type of games.

You have to consider though, 3DS Has Pokemon and a few Zelda games, besides it was fully backwards compatible.

I was wondering why app support for the Vita had all but dissapeared. Still waiting for those fucking Sony Reader, Crackle (also owned by Sony), Evernote (partenerd with Sony) and Crunchyroll apps.

IMO They should take a page from the Nook which started to specialize itself as a ''Reader's Tablet'' meaning a Tablet that could do some stuff mediocrily but was awesome for E-book reading. Same with the Vita, Martet it as a Tablet for Gamers, not all the app support you may want but great in what matters to you.

You know.... FFX is my favorite FF. But it WON'T help. You know why? Because it's an old game. Too old. Anyone who knew about the PAL version of the game knew that it was the english version of the International version. Yeah there will be some who gets a vita for that... but not many. No. New games has to sell the system. KH would help but again.... it has to be a new game and not a port.

I was against the Vita when it came out for many of the same reasons in this article. I didn't see a need for it given our current smartphone epidemic.
That all changed once I picked up my PS4. I realized that I wanted more than the throwaway casual games that smartphones offer. Remote play and the price drop to 200 was what got me in the door. After playing with it, its a fantastic gaming device. The screen is gorgeous and the various inputs are high quality and responsive. The library is actually pretty phenomenal considering I can play my PS4 games via remote play, PSP, great Indies, not to mention the vita's own library that includes some great exclusives. I have access to 1000 games on this thing not counting remote play.

Im happy Sony is not abandoning the device. Its an amazing piece of tech for $200

IF SONY WANTS THE SALES IT NEEDS TO BRING BACK MONSTER HUNTER!!!

We don't know how well Borderlands 2 runs on Vita, or if it has been toned down in graphics (which is likely). Considering GTA V pushed last gen consoles to their absolute limits, I find it highly unrealistic to ever expect any form of GTA V to ever reach the Vita.

the problem is 3ds is cheaper. most 3ds owners are little kids who have no money to buy a console for themselves. so they depend on their parents, who most likely dont know much about gaming to buy them a console, and who will obviously just buy the cheaper option to get their kids off their backs. to an oblivious parent its all the same just one of them is $50 or $70 cheaper :/

StarTrekGuy1701 said...

i agree, i consider myself a core gamer, and i cant stand smartphone games. i mean, how much gaming quality can you expect from a 5mb game you got for free? its ridiculous

Datguy said...

That's true, the markets changed. What would really help their sales would be if the PSV would be hackable, I know that the CFW on PSP gave alot of people a reason to buy it.

Note: This would help console sales, not sure about other sales :/

Datguy said...

I'm waiting for a flashplayer.... >.>

While what he said is mostly true. You can't expect to sell millions of units if you're not marketing it to people and putting it out there more. Hopefully with the slim coming out in America and now in the UK, they will be able to get more aggressive with the pricing and marketing of it.

The Vita has tons of potential still and it's selling more units more than ever, the PS4 helped a little but them getting more desirable games on it has also helped. People are starting to see that it's a viable option for playing some of their favorite games.

Won't match it, but it will sell great

I own a PSP and for the first year Vita was on the market I was against it. My collection of UMD games and movies were worthless with Vita and Sony wasn't going to give me a way to take them with me. No TV out. It just didn't grab me. Then I played one. Then I bought one. Now I love it.

The only thing really missing for me is those really great AAA titles that were even developed foe PSP. Where's the new God of War? Why aren't they porting the new AAssassin's Creed to Vita? No new Final Fantasy. I just don't get it. However, there are a lot of great games for it and I enjpy mine every day.

Netflix works great. I don't understand why they seem to have suspended app development for the Vita.

Last thing, if they would sell a PS4/PS Vita bundle, the Vita would take off. The best way to sell the system is to get them into people's hands. Once you pick it up you will want one ... bad.

GTA ,I am not sure if people will buy a PS VITA just for GTA ,it will be better on console anyway (because it is an open world with a lot of data to be load fastly): and that a console work ,for really I don't want to see GTA on VITA.
On the other hand ,Games like Borderlands 2 and Minecraft that is indeedly beautiful with a huge fantasy design world and nearly unbound experience that what I want to see ,games that are truly worthy ,I hope Borderlands 2 won't disappoint me (but Sony said it have everything including DLC's and it cross save ,I mean that's huge ,think about it ,if it is a cross save then it is the 'same' ,the same place's the same huge world the same experience ,I love it'I am waiting for Gameplay and Screenshots ,and with all DLC's that many gamers didn't try ,it will be huge for PS VITA.

Sorry to hurt your feelings fellas but me and my Nvidia Shield are enjoying 500 megabytes to over 2 gigabytes games like GrandTheft Auto Sanadreas Vice city and GTA3 along with tons of other console quality games and everything from Atari to Sega Dreamcast emulation. I'm a PS Vita early adopter and my Vita's collecting dust! My Nvidia Shield is far more powerful and versatile than my PS Vita in every way hell it even has full console controls! Sorry but Sony dropped the ball with the PS Vita.
