Sony Confirms PS Vita's 10 Year Life Cycle

Sony Exec John Koller confirms how long they intend to support the PS Vita, more details inside..........
On the topic of PS Vita life cycles John Coller had this to say:
“We’re in year one, so we’ll be supporting it for some time. But yeah, it does have its own 10-year life cycle. All of our platforms do… it’s a marathon, not a sprint. We expect long-term success from all our platforms.”
Let us know what you think of the life cycle in the comments below!

I don't think that the Vita is "Truely" dead or even metaphorically. I
think the Vita is simply "Asleep". I think Sony has something up it's
sleeve about the Vita that they want to save until after the release of
the WiiU. I think they are making us wait for something on purpose, Sony
is smart, look at what they did at gamescon this year. they stole the
show. Sony may look as though they are playing dumb for a bit but you
don't know what is happening behind closed doors to make that call. i
think 2013 will be great for Sony. it's Sony's turn again and history
has a strange way of repeating itself. The people who are saying that
Vita is dead are fooling themselves ;) Those people have yet to
understand that the mobile gaming industry is really quite different
from the console gaming spectrum of it.

Call Of Duty may be great
or may be Bad. Have you considered it may be average enough for you to
enjoy and not enough to inspire nor scare off developers to or fro the
Vita?

Lastly, Sony is not scrambling for developers, if that was a
case then they could get small-town developers to make games for Vita
quite easily. This is another sign that Sony is sitting back, waiting on
something bigger than you can comprehend. And this is why you are not a
Sony chairman. I would give the Vita until 2013 or 2014 to see
developers (and Sony) to take true advantages of the system... JUST AS
ANY SYSTEM

there was an article on ign that says that sony is gonna do PS3 + PS Vita bundle this christmas which would be awesome

Well said Marcus. If they plan to support this system for ten years then it still has PLENTY of time to get those 'must have' games.

Marcus, I hope you are right but I see a couple of problems here. "Sleeping" your launch year is bad business, not even bad business, its desperate business...Sony's numbers (stock and sales) are bad. Waiting for the WiiU to drop would be bad marketing as most of the attention would be diverted to the WiiU (I think this is not a solid point). I hope 2013 is a good year for Sony (I love their products) but the signs point otherwise...as for gamescon you missed a huge huge point here, almost all of Gamescon was dedicated to mobile gaming, which is where the developers are heading- yes there are HUGE differences in platforms, problem for the Vita is that most (the vast majority) are casual gamers.

You make a mediocre CoD sound like not a big deal, but it is...it's a high profile title and they gave it to a weak studio...a CoD with dismal sales would scare off developers with the mindset of "oh man CoD can't even sell on the Vita"

Sony is scrambling for developers they've mentioned it- numerous times, you can even find quotes from executives on this website. They are trying to get small development studios but that's not what will push huge numbers.

Now to the main event- this 10 year lifecycle...are you joking, the 360 and PS3 are about 6 years into their lifecycle and they are falling WAY behind the curve. More importantly if you have a bad first year, 2, or 3 you think this is going to draw resources/partners to your platform??? It takes 2 years to develop a Vita AAA title, if Sony didn't have a strong pool of studios before launch working hard on Vita titles, we've got a LONG wait ahead of us. The Vita has a 5 MAYBE 6 year shelf life...and that's IF they can get the ball rolling and fast. Claiming that the product is built for 10 years out isn't encouraging for current owners- it screams well its a weak unsupported product now, and that problem isn't going to be fully fixed for a couple or even few years- price cuts, non-proprietary memory, extended battery life and most important software support.

Relax everyone Sony is soon to announce their new gaming service for the PS Vita and Wikipad to have fully streamed PS2 & PS3 games! I have a friend that works for Sony give me the heads up.

Christopher Chalek said...

I hope this is true, skeptical due to the slow release of individual titles featuring streaming, this seems to be based off of contracts and the necessary firmware implementation to cross games over. Any more info on release window?

Elronza Williams Jr. said...

Yes late 2012 to early 2013 is when Sony will launch the streaming service here's a link to prove I'm stating facts: http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/26/wikipad-hands-on/

I wish it is true....... but the Fifa 13 copy paste is what probably the 3erd party developers are doing, the only developer that are taking this seriously is Ubisoft and first party dev. In my case im a Fifa, COD and Resident Evil Fanatic, soo im already regretting my purchase cause COD looks really terrible and is made by the same idiots that made Ressistance and no there is no news of RE and im not buying the same fifa game with different title. I literally felt sick about the fifa incident, by the way i dislike RPG, JRPG and puzzle games.

AND my other beef with this crap is that i cant see videos that are in the web, so i cant play and i also cant watch porn, so what the heck am i using the Vita. Even my ipod nano gets more used.

This is the first and last time i buy a console in the first year..... its expensive, almost no game selections and u dont know if dev are gonna support it, the only positive i can say about my Vita is that i havent heard of any hardware problems like crap box.

Can some develop a Android tablet with real console like games and have a accessory controller attachment, is that to much to ask?

Shinmachine said...

Yeah but you have to make it consistant to the quality your putting, i am still waiting for a good game, already played uncharted, rayman, gravity R and FIFA 5 months ago..... thats a lot of time and why the fuck Capcom doesnt port the RE game they did on 3ds.

All about knowledge.

Are you referencing playstation mobile? Took that from the article: "Though Gaikai is still working with the Wikipad post-Sony buyout, CEO James Bower told us the game streaming service won't be there at launch -- he's hoping it'll arrive by year's end, "but that's up to Sony." If so I believe playstation mobile offers a small catalog of mobile specific software. If it is a full "streaming service" would one need to be on wi-fi to stream, an On-Live style service? The remote play for games like Ico is a nice treat but it certainly isn't a seamless transition. Over a year ago we saw the Vita stream Killzone 3 at TGS, this technology still hasn't been released.

I really think the Vita is an amazing piece of hardware but when Sony fumbled the launch and then E3, tells me some nonsense like the system is going to have a 10 year lifespan, the manner in which the pspGO was handled and ultimately silently killed, and that they are struggling to get 3rd party developers- I am concerned to say the least.

I hope they can turn it around, that AC liberation (and hopefully a few other titles) is a huge success and they make some smart decisions over the holidays to really drum up attention and sales because with the WiiU launch, the growing popularity and software support of the 3DS, i-gaming consumers pulling developers, and people tightening their wallets I struggle to see how Sony can realistically support the Vita.

10 years...how about we focus on year 1 and 2 Sony...

donnydutchman said...

what you are saying could be true. sony did bought Gaikai after all.

Elronza Williams Jr. said...

No it's true click the link and read for yourself. I can't go into full details but my friends in a position where he knows what the next move is within Sony as it is part of his job.

Christopher Chalek said...

I understand. Wasn't trying to get you to disclose any information, I've actually got some ears in at Sony, not to mention having some non-disclosures which I really wish I could share. But from what I'm hearing there is a lot of internal debate going on as far as the fate of the Vita and it's role in Sony's gaming division (which if you have a friend at Sony you know is under some serious scrutiny), and heck look what they did their marketing team after the Vita's launch...though one could attribute this to Sony's cuts across the board. I like the idea of a streaming gaming service but I'm not sure that's going to move a lot of units. I think consumers are still looking for those exclusive  titles and value (cross buy). A streaming service like on-live I think would be met with a tepid reception. While I'm not a CoD fan- I think that turning it over to Nihilistic studio could be a death blow for the Vita- and again I love my Vita and want it to succeed but dropping the ball this first year was tragic.

im just waiting for that ps vita comeback. the eventual price cut will have more people with the console on hand generating interest in third party developers blah blah bla.Its funny how many people don't see the big picture and whine about a price-cut. do people really think that Sony can just cut the price early in a console's life without destroying consumer trust? doing that would spit in the faces of early adopters, making it more likely for people to just wait for the price to go down. Sony is a long standing company so of course they're planning things for the vita and not just standing around hoping. we'll just have to see what kind of surprises we'll be getting next year.

Milton Martinez said...

i know right, Capcom is a money whore so I'd have thought they'd jump on the opportunity. must be some contract they're bound to.

Elronza Williams Jr. said...

I agree with you 100% on the exclusives. But think of how awesome it would be to be able to play all your PS3 games on the go! Who would want a WiiU then when PS3 & Vita combined offer more games?? Not to mention this will make my 3G PS Vita make sense to me and other consumers and boost the sells of that model which equal wins all around for Sony!

I played and I enjoyed resistance but then I played modern combat 3 at android...

Other than hard control at hand phone the game itself is far better than resistance.

Man, compare 7$ game from game loft and 40$ from nihilistic... Heck its so ironic

do handhelds really last ten years?? i have had my Ps3 for 6 years and it's in great shape, but usually handheld devices only last 2-3 years.

Games ell the console simple. I never had a psp but I bought a ps vita day 1 because I knew that ps classics would be added to it and I could once again be taken away to the worlds of final fantasy. Basically it needs more dev support. I mean where is FFX they announced moons ago. Make the games and they shall come.

ghostshadow said...

I sure hope it can pull through for 10 years. Poor guy hasn't gotten a chance yet it's already looking bleak out there.. . I really want this console to succeed. I want it to sell more than the psp did. I want it to just wipe the floor with the 3ds. There's no reason why it can't.  It just needs to get the support it deserves.  It's by far the absolute best hand held console ever produced.  Sony actually listened to it's customers on many features of the vita. WE finally have dual analog sticks! bigger higher resolution screen, faster cpu and gpu, more memory, etc.  Everything we wanted in the PSP, we got in the Vita.  Though it woud have been nice if they had kept the old memory stick format or something, it is still an awesomely engineered piece of hardware.

Geyer2635 said...

Who cares about playing PS3 games on the go? Why would anyone in their right mind by a vita JUST for that, especially when they already HAVE a PS3. And that is nice and dandy that you take your Vita with you every where, but everyone else has a cell phone, which in every way is more efficient. I can see you really love the vita, which is cool. Keep supporting it, but I'm a realist. Sony has (IMO) one way to get the consumers back: MAKE MORE GAMES. Not only games, but GOOD GAMES. Otherwise, they will fall short and something crazy will happen (like Nintendo buying them out >.>)
