Sony Reducing PS Vita Manufacturing Costs To Cut Price Next Year


Some new information suggests that Sony are working with their engineers to reduce manufacturing costs and eventually cut the price, more details inside..........

Sony engineers are working to reduce the cost of manufacturing the PS Vita so it can cut the price of the handheld - but that price cut won't happen this year.Sony's fledgling portable has endured torrid sales since its launch last year in Japan and early this year in Europe, sparking calls for the Japanese company to slash its price.

But Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer at Gamescom this week that the price of Vita will not drop this year. Instead, it hopes prospective buyers will find new bundles, such as the LittleBigPlanet Vita bundle announced during Sony's Gamescom press conference earlier this week, good enough value to convince them to take the plunge.

"People like cheap or free," he said. "Of course, cost reduction is one area our engineering team is working on. But we just launched the platform earlier this year. It takes time to do so."At a certain point in the future we would like to address the pricing issue for some of the people who are waiting.

But this year we are trying to add value by creating different types of bundles. We announced we will provide LittleBigPlanet PS Vita bundle pack. That's affordable for people who are looking for a good deal.

"So, no price cut this year? "No," Yoshida replied. "It's too early."

thank you :) I felt completly ripped off after Nintendo gave the 3ds a price drop, a year should justify my purchase.

It doesn't need one though!! I mean, yeah, cheaper is sometimes a little better, but remember the PSP? Remember when it released for, umm, $249.99? Remember it did not have all of the features that the Vita does like accelerometer, touch screen, touch pad, 2 cameras, dual analog? And the price for the Vita is still $249.99.  I think it was a justifiable purchase upon launch, people are being a bit too greedy nowadays.

The PS Vita doesn't need a price drop! It's a handheld with specs that are equal to a PS3's. The only price that needs to drop is the memory cards price.

Not equal, but near. Even so, hundreds of times better than the gaming you get on an iPad 3 or iP4S. The price is right in my opinion. Having such treasure on the go is unbelievable, especially for those that don't have a comfy couch to stay on while playing console games. I love to take my Vita in bed when I go to sleep for it doesn't make any noise. =] 

Once there'll be tons of people having this handheld, not only developers would get more courage to make tons of new games for this device, but there will be so much more chances of finding goodies on near and players in the multiplayer modes of each game. =]

Actually the PS Vita's specs eclipse the PS3's in some ways. And as of this fall the PS Vita will be 5 consoles in one. You'll be able to play PS Vita games, PSP games, PSN Mini's, PS1 games, and Sony Mobile games. And if you think Sony Mobile is a joke I have to tell you your wrong as Sega aswell as over 20 other developers including EA are already making games for PlayStation Suite which at last count is over 450 games and thats a fact for that ass as I own a Sony Xperia Play R800a which has PlayStation Suite!

I agree with you on all you just said! 5 consoles in one makes it stand out so much! So yep, it's real gaming machine despite the fact it's a handheld. This is what I wished for since I got my first current gen console, which unfortunately wasn't a PS3, but I will repair my mistake as soon as possible.

It is good news for the ps3 owners who are still worried about wasting their money on the Vita since they have the console (in their opinion they have it all) but these news will change these stupid thoughts, I personally have a PS3 And A PS Vita and I'm Enjoying them both and mostly the Vita since it's launch date and I remain excited until now especially because of gamescom 2012.

Your welcome brother also compare the PS3's specs to the PS Vita's and you'll see the PS Vita's more powerful the whole way round it is just toned down to conserve battery life!

 Not necessarily, a big part of the cost is in things like transportation. So buying a bigger truck to ship them around in might also be a way to cut cost. Or using fewer people in the factory. So it doesn't necessarily have to do with the "parts". In someways they may actually end up finding "better" parts that are cheaper.

RIght! I think that's one of the main problems of the vita, the memory cards are overpriced, I know a lot of people that are waiting to buy a vita just because of that.

it is not more powerful than the ps3. the ps3 support games in 1080p where as the vita cant even do 720. also the airforce made the 33rd super computer in the world with ps3s. im also pretty sure the ps3 has 16 cores. Though the vita is powerful the thing to compare it to in terms of power is probably a high end tablet like the new ipad, samsung not 10.1 or nexus7

the psp tech back then was considered high tech and costed a lot, same as the vita after a couple of years where the tech is not up to date itll cost less its callex inflation

Look here fool the PS3 only has 256 mb's of ram vs the PS Vita's 512 mb's the only thing the PS3 has over the PS Vita besides bigger and swapable harddrives is its 256 mb's of video ram vs the PS Vita's 128 mb's of the same video ram! And again the Vita's been toned down to save battery life. So kick rocks with running outta your mouth sideways about things you no nothing of as you make you look like an ass!

You Good Sir. are 100% right it is only these memory cards keeping most others from buying this spec laden beast of gaming! We are lucky to own such a beautiful device. I'm 30 years old and I still have my original NES and GameBoy and am impressed with the PS Vita at how far portable gaming has gone!

The Vita's the size of a ps3 controller (almost)  it has its own screen, wifi and etc, it shouldnt be compaired to a console thats 25x's bigger than it, and if you do compair take into consideration  its size, if its got half the specs a ps3 has then its still a winner. - dont think i explain my point too well there but ive only been up 5minutes

Ah Stephen brother the specs I listed above are the Vita's true hardware credentials. The Vita really is more powerful than the PS3 in most aspects I don't understand why everyone has a problem accepting this true fact! Technology improving over time is a known fact of life. Yes 6 years ago the PS3 was Godzillia to the world of gaming! To day Sony themselves created a handheld that is more powerful than the PS3 in most aspects and only lags behind it in a few others. But don't take my word for it! Google PS Vita Hardware and Specs for yourself and see that nothing but the truth is being spit from these lips!

Come to think of it, I returned to ask you something, while also having read the others replies. I remember that, I think, in January 2011 they showed MGS4 can run on the Vita with a framerate of 30fps. Basically Vita could run PS3 games, but the battery would run out of energy in like 30 minutes or less, right? I'd like to have your opinion on this.

Yes that is 100% true what you just said and hackers and people like myself with custom firmware on their PS3's already have full remote play with their PS Vita's with barely any lag! And it proves as I said the Vita's more powerful than the PS3 in most reguards but Sony and Developers tone it down to conserve battery life! Please do your self a favor and read the PS3's Hardware and Specs vs the PS Vita's Hardware and Specs and see for yourself the truth.

this is something i never understood.
when the vita first launched. many were saying that it needed to have "digital books" like the kindel and angry birds...
i had just gotten my ps vita about a week after launch. got my vita from amazon(ha, no tax and free shipping!)
then i got a "full body" screen protector and a case pack.
yet the console for its specs and price was being suggested to get apps like angry birds and digital books...what the fvck.
i hate game on my phone. for several reasons.
the graphics suck. the stories are very shallow. the devs behind mobile games are fairly new to the industry. and even with ports like GTA vice city... why the fvck would i want to play a game like that on my phone...i use my phone for internet, texting and most importantly..phone calls...

Not sure if a price drop is feasable on the hardware, at least until the cost of the components drops.  I think the system should be bundled with a 4GB memory card, and for the memory card prices to drop closer to what a similar sized MicroSD would cost.  Also, allow the system to swap memory cards without having to format the system and re-download everything.

I used to think the memory cards were overpriced, but if you are not buying games digitally, that 32GB will last a very long time.   The 4GB card is overpriced, it shouldn't be more than $5, the 8GB shouldn't be more than $15, but once you get into 16, and 32, you definatly get a lot more for your money.   As I have written in Amazon reviews and gotten universal acclaim for.   The problem is NOT the memory cards once you get above 8GB, the problem IS digitally downloading said games, you save 3-5 dollars because they want you to shell out extra money for the memory cards.   Save your lazy butts 15 seconds and just swap game cards out, it's not that hard.

Amen to that.   If the Vita is going to sell games, it needs more quality shooters, and RPG's, it does have a few good fighting games already, and Street Fighter X Tekken will help with Mortal Kombat, Blazblue, Marvel vs Capcom 3, and Reality Fighters(lol), but there are ZERO, RPG's, this is why the PSP is still outselling the Vita, people WANT to play these RPG's, but they cannot for months after they are released on the PSVita.

Unchained Blades is a very good, deep dungeon crawler RPG with skill trees kinda like FF12.   You have followers you can swap in and out and later in the game, party members.   You have to explore the dungeons to find the keys, ways to open locked doors on the inside, all the traps and nuisances you find in a lot of dungeon crawlers.   So what if it has anime style graphics.   Did that stop people from playing Lunar Silver Star Harmony, Y's, Trails in the Sky, or even games like Final Fantasy 1/2/4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11/12/13?, Tactics, Dissidia, Kingdom Hearts?

Same can be said for Cellphones.   How many phones are $799($199-$299)  with a contract, yet go down for dirt cheap 6 months later?

However, let's also not forget, that with the PSP, the first model had less onboard memory than 2000 and 3000.   That same change could happen in the Vita's, boosting onboard memory from 512MB to 1GB, and if they want to really get technical, turn the 960x540 into 1920x1080, essentially the higher resolutions are what take more memory.  The Vita is capable of running all PS3 games right now, I'm sure it will struggle to reproduce high quality graphics like Final Fantasy 13, or Skyrim
