You can bet that Sony has every intention of using Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception as a springboard to the PlayStation Vita launch title, Uncharted: Golden Abyss.
While official worldwide sales figures have yet to appear, the publisher did manage to ship 3.8 million copies to retailers, a good sign that demand for the game is/was high.
What's especially interesting, though, are the numbers from Japan. During its first week on the shelf, Sony managed to sell 124,989 copies, a healthy sum that's more than double the first week sales of Uncharted 2.
What does this mean? The Japanese may slowly warm to Nathan Drake and his treasure hunting shenanigans, and that would be aces for Sony, considering PlayStation Vita launches December 17 in that country alongside...we'll give you one guess...Uncharted: Golden Abyss.
Will that game be the highest selling title in the land of the rising sun? Probably not. We expect a more traditional Japanese game/franchise taking the top spot by a wide margin, but it's refreshing to see a country that usually snubs its collective nose at Western developed games (especially from Microsoft) embracing at least one of them.
As for the U.S. and Europe, Uncharted 3's critical acclaim and positive fan reception should pave the way for Golden Abyss to dominate the February 22 Vita debut, where Drake's adventure has a much bigger chance at being the number one must have game for the system.
That said, it still remains to be seen whether the franchise is big enough to sell at a 1:1 ratio with the hardware. Sony's decision to withhold the official sales figures also casts some doubt on the series' overall strength.
On the flip side, smart marketing on the company's part (all those Subway commercials) should continue with Golden Abyss and help consumers make those all important launch day decisions on what to buy.
