PS Vita - Taking Augmented Reality to a whole New Level

President of Sony's Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, showed some of the PlayStation Vita's augmented reality features.
According to the trailers released, the Vita uses "wide area" augmented reality and "markerless" augmented reality. Using its forward-facing camera, the Vita can track multiple cards as once in real-time and display augmented reality visuals on the screen.

The Vita uses technology that introduces virtual elements onto the camera's video feed in real-time. During a live demonstration, Yoshida filmed a magazine sitting in front of him and touched the screen, causing a virtual hole to open up in the video feed and releasing an Ape Escape monkey into the world. Yoshida rotated the camera around the monkey and the Vita realistically angled the character to create the illusion of a solid 3D object.

These technologies can be applied in a number of different ways, and will very likely be a fsctor into PlayStation Vita games moving forward.
